  8.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To disseminate AIDS awareness among adolescents in Higher
  9.        Secondary Schools through five systematic workshops (WS). METHODS:
  10.        WS1--Sensitization for all teachers of IX, X, XI, XII Std. with
  11.        identification of peer educators. WS2--Specialisation for a few special
  12.        teachers and parents through one day In-house training program.
  13.        WS3--Demonstration by Teachers for Peer educators. WS4--Performance by
  14.        peer educators for fellow students. WS5--Monitoring school program on
  15.        AIDS education. RESULTS: Performance by Peer educators for fellow
  16.        students is more effective in those schools where all four workshops are
  17.        systematically completed. Out of 480 city schools DESH has targetted to
  18.        cover in 3 years, one-sixth has had WS1, out of which 50 schools have
  19.        completed all Ws4. As a result, 10 Schools have independently started
  20.        youth movement through stage Plays/Teleplays, Exhibition, Slogans,
  21.        Poems, Projects, Flip Charts etc and developed it as community out-reach
  22.        efforts. DISCUSSION: Coverage of all city schools aiming at maximum
  23.        participation and involvement within the next two years is feasible only
  24.        if the program is incorporated in the school curriculur activities and a
  25.        weekly period is made mandatory to cover social health education
  26.        focusing on prevention of AIDS.
